How It Works

What We Are
The Liahona Independent Study Program (LiahonaEdOnline) is a 32 week program which may be used as your main curriculum or as a supplement to your home school program. Three core academic subjects are available: History, Language Arts/Grammar and Science. You may enroll in all three courses or any course individually.  Subjects are filmed daily in front of live classrooms at Liahona Academy in Pleasant Grove, Utah. These subjects are taught with a Latter-day Saint gospel base and divided into a four year rotation. (Please see our “Scope and Sequence” for further explanation.) Both the Academy and Independent Study program are accredited through Northwest Accreditation Commission . Classes may be taken for credit or non-credit.

Our motivating teachers are well-qualified in their subjects and strive to provide a strong academic base, instill a love of learning, integrate revealed gospel principles and encourage patriotism. Two academic levels are available:

Junior High (6th through 8th grade)
High School ( 9th through 12th grade)

Parents decide which of the levels best suits their child’s skills and age. Classes and homework are designed so that students remain under the direction of their parents.

Liahona Independent Study Courses
Liahona offers an annual 32 week program of three core academic subjects which correpond with the course of study at Liahona Academy:  These subjects are taught with a Latter-day Saint gospel base. Math Credit may be granted to accredited students who use either Math U See or Saxon math programs. Students must take one proctored exam each semester for their math class in order to receive credit. Please fill out the Off-Campus Course request/approval form and remember that approval must be received before you begin the class. Additional fees apply. If you have any questions about this program please contact the office.
In addition, Liahona offers a program where you can choose from Elective Classes and core classes that were filmed in previous years.  For instance, if a student joins Liahona their Junior year of high school and needs a class not in the current rotation, it may be available from a previous year.   Tuition / Fees and registration information for Elective Classes will be posted soon. Please check back for details.

In the Fall, Liahona Independent Study will begin offering Elective Classes in Spanish 1 & 2, Latin, Geography, Health, and Financial Literacy and will continue to make new courses available. You will be able to fast-track these courses as quickly as you can accomplish the work. Check back often to see what new courses have been added.

Liahona Independent Study Courses are Online!
Classes are viewed on a computer wherever you have internet access.  You may watch any class you are registered for, as many times as you would like.

When We Start and End

We begin filming the current year rotation of classes on the last Wednesday in August. Week 1 classes are uploaded to the site and ready to watch by Sept. 8th. Classes run for a total of 32 weeks, minus holiday breaks. The weeks are divided into two semesters. The final week, you will receive a non-filmed practice ACT test . The current year’s online classes may be accessed from the time they are uploaded until June 15th.  ALL accredited work MUST be submitted no later than June 15th.

If you join Liahona partway into the current year, you may start on the current week, start at the beginning of the previous semester, or start at the beginning of the year.  If you choose to begin with the previous semester or at the beginning of the school year, any tuition due prior to the current week must be paid in full. Monthly payments may be made thereafter. No matter when a student joins they must be finished by June 15th.

Student Involvement
Students from the Academy and Distance Education program often develop close friendships. To help us introduce students to each other, all students are asked to fill out “Getting to Know You” questions in the secure portion of our website. This information provides a forum for students to meet and develop friendships. Distance Education students may correspond with academy students and staff by phone, mail, or email. All Liahona Distance Education students are invited to join academy students and staff at the annual Fall Youth Conference and Summer Super/Service Trip.

Youth Conference is held in October at BYU’s “Aspen Grove” Alumni Complex in Provo Canyon. The Super/Service Trip is held each summer and provides a memory-making experience at a destination rich in history and where we can provide service. Cost and destination vary yearly.

All students are invited to be included in the Liahona Yearbook. Graduating seniors, both accredited and non-accredited, may participate in our graduation ceremonies.

Website
Once enrolled with Liahona, access information is provided for the secure portion of our website. We strongly encourage parents to frequently access needed information from the website. There are tools for parents and students, such as a Weekly Outline section where teachers post daily assignments, notes, supplemental material, answer keys and important class information, an area to check student scores, Getting To Know You profiles and other helpful educational information.

ACT Test
Every spring Liahona students, 9th - 12th grade, take the ACT practice test. This prepares them to take the official ACT test by their Junior and Senior years and is one reason our students score points higher than their public school counterparts.

Grade Reports / Transcripts / Certificates / Graduation
Accredited Grade Reports are automatically generated by Liahona after the June 15th, 2009 deadline.

Non-Accredited Grade Reports - Parents may send in a Grade Report Request form at the end of the year and Liahona will generate a non-accredited grade report.

Transcripts
A cumulative accredited transcript for graduating seniors is available upon written request and will be sent to the college or university of your choice.

Certificates of Completion
A yearly Certificate of Completion is available upon written request at the end of each year to accredited and non-accredited students who have successfully completed the year’s studies. To qualify for a Certificate of Completion a student must have been enrolled for 80% of the year and received at least a C average.

Graduation
All accredited and non-accredited graduating seniors are invited to attend Liahona’s graduation services at the end of the school year. An accredited graduating senior with 24 credits in specific categories may receive a State of Utah diploma. Those on the non-accredited track must have achieved a minimum of a C average on 85% of the assignments and tests or have a signed statement from their parents confirming that all parental educational goals have been met. Senior class students who desire to continue on to college are strongly encouraged to take the yearly ACT test and keep a portfolio.
